QCell launched Mobile Money Services in Gambia

QCell has officially launched its mobile money services , under the brand name ‘Qodoo’. In a launch event at its head office on Tuesday 22-Mar-2016, QCell’s CEO Muhammed Jah announced the commercial introduction of mobile money services in partnership with major financial institutions in the country. Qodoo users will be able to use their phones to send and receive money, buy QCell voice/data credit, buy ‘QPower’ electricity credit, pay bills and much more.

According to the Daily Observe Newspaper, The Governor of the Central Bank of The Gambia, Amadou Colley has stated that the introduction of mobile money service in The Gambian economy  is a game changer for financial inclusion. The Governor also expressed his institution’s profound gratitude to Qcell mobile company for their steadfastness in launching this important service in the country given the fact that  “over 80% of The Gambian population” have no access to financial services and conventional banking in the form of retail branches and Automated Teller Machines (ATMs),

How to Register for a Qodoo Mobile Money Account.

Qcell team recently uploaded a video that explains how to register for a Qodoo Mobile Money account.  User have to activate their mobile money accounts after successful registration.

Mobile Money Services Regulation in the Gambia

In line with the Central Bank of Gambia regulation for the provision of mobile money business (issued in Oct 2011), mobile transfer instructions should not be more than D10,000 per transaction. Mobile money service providers can also appoint cash merchants ( agents) provided the they meet the requirements outlined in section 6 of the CBG guideline.
